Air interface enhancements for 3G and beyond-3G mobile radio communications

چکیده
|In mobile radio communications, for a given system bandwidth the number of supported mobile terminals and the o ered data rates per mobile terminal should be maximized. The enhancement of the air interfaces plays an important role when pursuing this goal. In the paper various possibilities of air interface enhancements suited for 3G and beyond-3G mobile radio systems are discussed. The considered approaches include advanced detection techniques, adaptive antennas, the rationale of opportunistic transmission, receiver and channel oriented transmission, and novel air interface architectures.

Key technologies and concepts for beyond-3G networks
Standardization of 3 Generation (3G) mobile communication systems has produced the first specification releases and the commercial deployment of the 3G systems has started. Whereas 1G and 2G focused on efficiently providing voice services, in 3G a lot of attention has been devoted to solutions that support both Circuit Switched (CS) and Packet Switched (PS) communication. That has called for ve...

Interoperation of different fixed and mobile networks is one key feature of systems beyond 3G, specifically between wireless local area networks, covering hot-spots with high data rates, and mobile cellular systems with full coverage. This comprises the vertical handover, i.e. the handover between systems with different air-interfaces, which are investigated in the paper. In contrast to several...

The currently deployed wireless infrastructure supports the second generation of mobile communications comprised of many distinctly different standards (GSM, CDMAOne, TDMA, PDC, etc.). As a result, interoperability among these standards is nearly impossible with respect to the cellular base station. As the third-generation mobile communications system (3G) initiative began in the mid-1980s, the...

In current and next 3G and beyond wideband code-division with multiple access (WCDMA) cellular networks, sharing the radio access network has become an important issue for 3G mobile operators. 3G and beyond network rollout is a very costly and time consuming process. Therefore, sharing of network infrastructure among operators offers an alternative solution to reducing the investment in the cov...
